Karl was the 4th child of Gottlieb Baranowski. He was born in Ulleschen E. Prussia on July 30, 1884. He died June 20, 1971 (Age 86) in Decatur, Illinois. He was a coal miner and farmer in Germany. He came to the USA in 1913 with my Mom, Augusta, and two brothers, Otto (3) and Carl (3 Mo).

He and his family left Bremen, Germany on the ship Neckar. He arrived at Ellis Island, New York. After they were processed through immigrations, they came to Decatur, Illinois. The Lipka family, who was his sister, sponsored the family.

He worked as a coal miner in the Decatur, Macon County Coal Company. Paul and David Beggs owned the Coal Company. It was located between South Franklin and South Main St. in Decatur.

He first lived at 1405 E. Grand Ave. Decatur. He also had 20 acres of farm ground on W. Grove rd. and 7 acres on S. Franklin St Rd., in the South Shores area. He raised almost all of the food for the large family. He grew vegetables, fruit, and raised pigs, cows, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese for the large family. He made cheese and butter from the cows milk.. He grew raspberries and strawberries to sell. He was a farmer and sold vegetables at the local food stores. He and Mom were very religious and attended and belonged to the First German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Decatur. It was a small church located on Woodford St. the women sat on one side and the men sat on the other. All the women wore head coverings. The services were spoken in German originally and then in the1940’s both German and English. They also had church in their homes during the week. The preachers were from within the church.
